Trouble. Discouragement. Sad feelings of despair. These past weeks seem to have brought a basketful of prayers needed for friends, family, and even our country at large that are struggling with life, health, and just day to day survival. Just the other day I read of a little boy who came running into the house from outside one early morning. “ Mama, Mama, you can’t see the morning!” It was foggy outside and he cried with sadness. That’s how it is sometimes for us, isn’t it? Maybe the morning or even the entire day ahead is obscured by something surrounding us. Yet, God remains faithful.
In Psalm 77, the writer repeatedly uses the words “ I remembered” or “ I thought about”. Though he couldn’t see the way ahead, he could remember and think about what he knew. It was enough to keep him going; give him hope for the next step or hour ahead. Our feelings come and go, but God’s creation of the hills and stars stand firm. He tells us truth when He says, “ I will never leave you or forsake you”.
“ I cried out to God for help; I cried out to God to hear me. When I was in distress, I sought the Lord.” Psalm 77:1-2 When we are hurting it is tempting to think about ourselves. Discouragement is a tool of Satan that he uses just when we are at our lowest point. He knows just when to strike and knock us down into a pit. We have to work hard at being strong when facing our spiritual enemy. Satan is alive and well on planet Earth, and disheartenment is a powerful weapon in his arsenal.
As we face times of material needs, physical danger, disappointment, pain, or debilitating illness….or are praying for those who are…it is hard, but we must remember that our feelings do not affect the facts of God. He never changes, and though life sometimes gives us struggles, the beauty is, we do not have to toss and turn alone. We are not trapped by circumstances. God’s touches of mercy reach down and draw us upward towards Him.
Has someone loved you and given to you without expecting anything in return? Has someone seen suffering in your face and responded with tenderness and compassion? Accept it when you need it, let them bless you. And upon remembering those gestures later, pay it forward to someone around you who shows a need. May God help us to remember to seek Him, and to focus on his shining light when the way seems foggy.
In my working years, I was blessed to have co-workers who had a strong faith. In one of our tough times we came upon this verse from II Corinthians 4: 8. We printed it out and taped it up in our coat closet to remind us each day of God’s love and watch care over us. I can’t tell you how many times I read that verse and it gave me strength for the day…sometimes for the very hour ahead. I offer it to you today, hoping it will encourage you and help the light to shine through whatever darkness you are experiencing.
“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” Keep looking up, from where your help comes!!!
Just a side note this week to express thanks to each and every one who planned and put together another wonderful weekend at the Fulda Wood Duck Festival. Your hard work and commitment does not go unnoticed. Thank you so much for the events planned, delicious food available, and just so many chances to see friends, old and new. It was Fulda at its best once again!
