FULDA — In an action-packed high school football thriller which featured electrifying long touchdown runs and also had its share of well-executed scoring drives, the Fulda Raiders earned a 36-26 Homecoming Game victory over Heron Lake-Okabena at Alex Fisher Field last Friday evening, September 15.

The team-oriented triumph was the first win of the season for the Raiders, who were outscored by a 106-20 margin in their first two games of the season (58-14 to Westbrook-Walnut Grove at Westbrook August 31 and 48-6 to Red Rock Central at Lamberton September 8).

HL-O entered the game in similar fashion as the Wildcats had been outscored by a 90-6 spread (46-0 loss to Hills-Beaver Creek at Hills August 31 and a 44-6 loss to Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at Heron Lake September 8).

Friday night, however, each team scored points in all four quarters, highlighted by a Fulda 16-point third quarter which opened up a 30-18 advantage for the Raiders, who effectively responded to each Wildcat touchdown with another one of their own.

“Our guys showed a lot of character,” declared first-year FHS head football coach Jonathon Curry. “Every time HL-O scored, we were able to answer, and eventually pull away at the end.”

Displaying a balanced offensive attack, spearheaded by the efficient all-around play of junior quarterback Levi Spittle, the Raiders racked up a total of 333 yards, spread evenly through the air (165 yards passing) and on the ground (168 yards rushing).
