DANUBE — Playing on the same field where Bob Bruggers, a Minnesota high school sports legend, played his high school football back in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the host Renville County West Jaguars earned a hard-fought, 34-12, victory over the visiting Fulda Raiders last Friday evening, September 22.
Bruggers was an exceptional three-sport athlete at Danube High School who received a memorable standing ovation at Williams Arena during the 1962 one-class Minnesota State Basketball Tournament when he was a high-scoring senior. After playing football as a linebacker for the Minnesota Gophers in the middle ‘60s, Bruggers played two seasons with the AFL Miami Dolphins and three seasons (1969-1971) with the NFL San Diego Chargers as a linebacker.
While there was no one of Bruggers’ caliber on the field this time at Danube, there was plenty of exciting action between the Raiders and the Jaguars.
The game was much closer than the final score indicates.
Fulda scored first and last in the contest, but RCW (Renville, Danube and Sacred Heart) scored five touchdowns in between the two six-pointers by the Raiders and evened its season record at 2-2.
The Raiders (1-3) return to the home field for a Friday night clash with Hills-Beaver Creek (2-2) with special fund-raising efforts to help with medical expenses for seriously-injured Patriot senior Trenton Bass. Game time on September 29 at Alex Fisher Field is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m.
At Danube, Fulda accumulated a total of 314 yards of offense (153 yards passing on 14 completions and 161 yards rushing on 40 carries). But too many Raider drives came up short without points, as the Jaguars defense continually stiffened near the goal line.
