After practicing together for more than two weeks, the 2018 edition of the new high school football pairing arrangement of Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda is prepared and ready for game action.
That opening game will be at Heron Lake’s Memorial Field on Thursday evening of this week, August 30, prior to the Labor Day weekend.
Carrying the voted upon new mascot name of Coyotes, HL-O / F or HLOF will tangle with the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m .
“The kids are anxious for a game,” says HLOF co-head coach Jared Bourquin, who is in charge of the Coyotes’ defense. “We had a good summer, playing together and learning each other’s abilities and the roles they will be able to fill. Practices have gone well and we sure think that we will have good depth at most positions.”
There are nine seniors, eight juniors, five sophomores and 13 freshman on the current 35-member Coyote varsity roster.
“With more numbers, our competition for starting positions has been a good thing,” said Bourquin. “We’ve had some good challenges and expect those to continue as we get into the game schedule. Plenty of kids will see playing time in games.”
