1923-MILDRED SCHWAB-2016
Mildred Mabel Schwab, 92, daughter of Fred and Sophie (Vehlow) Dittmann, was born at home on December 9, 1923 on a rented farm northwest of Brewster in Nobles County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brewster. Her parents purchased a farm northwest of Dundee, MN from an insurance company in 1936. Mildred continued attending country school and later Fulda High School graduating in 1942. Soon after graduation, she started working as a machine operator at International harvester in St. Paul, MN.
In 1945 she married Victor Schwab. In July 1946 her husband was discharged from the army. Mildred helped her husband with field work while living in Bloom Township until their retirement in 1984 when they moved to Fulda.
For many years she was an active member of St. Gabriel’s Ladies Aid Guild and was elected Treasurer and President. She often prepared food and baked cakes for funeral lunches.
She was also involved in the Clover Bloom 4-H Club for 8 years where she served as a Leader for 2 years.
She helped her son, Gene, by cooking large tasty meals at his agricultural chemical plot tours which involved about 50 farmers per night.
She enjoyed reading magazines and newspapers from which she clipped many recipes, many of which are still untried. She also liked gardening, quilting, card playing and visiting family and friends.
For the past several years she has been a resident of Dow Rummel Village nursing home in Sioux Falls, SD until she passed away on July 7, 2016.
In 2006 Mildred told her daughter that she wanted to live to be 92 and she did.
Mildred is survived by two children, Gene Schwab and Susan Schwab along with many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Victor in 2008, her parents and all 11 siblings – 3 sisters, LuVilla Vaux, Vida Paplow and Gladys Dittmann and 8 brothers, Walter, Harold, Henry, Buddie, Ernest, Everett, Harlan and Clarence Dittmann.
A private funeral mass was held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Cathedral in Sioux Falls.
Burial will be at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Cemetery in Fulda.
