Wilson retires as Nobles County Recorder; Yager to assume position

Recording property transactions, birth and death certificates and marriage licenses are among the duties of the County Recorder. The Nobles County Recorder has decided to retire, and Lynn Wilson will be turning over the reigns to Thelma Yager who will be sworn in on January 7.

The elected position was contested in November, with Yager winning the position.

Wilson was elected to the position in 2002, and has spent 16 years in the position. She was first hired by Nobles County as a transit marketing coordinator, and worked with senior centers and townships, bringing information back to the County Commissioners.

She explained that grant money funded her position, and when that expired, she filed for the office of Nobles County Recorder. She replaced Joyce Howard, who had held the position for 16 years.

She appreciates the fact that the Recorder position is an elected one, rather than appointed. “There is a process to follow, and the County Board could change it,” she indicated.  As an elected position though, she works for the residents of the county in a salaried position. She has taken limited vacations, showing her dedication to the position over the past 16 years.

Wilson has two deputy recorders in her office, Renee and Donna, who have worked with her as she has served as Recorder. Donna has been with the county for 25 years and Renee for over five years.

The Round Lake area resident learned the position using paper receipts and a ledger log, which showed payments to each program involved. “We then decided on a computer program in 2005, and everything is now indexed on the computer,” Wilson explained. Checking property records and genealogy searches are the main items done, as people look for their historical roots. Bankers, attorneys and the FSA office also investigate property and other records.

Recently added is the ability to look at these documents online for a fee, allowing people to look from their own offices, rather than visiting the Recorder’s office in the Nobles County Government Center downtown Worthington.
