Alex Charboneau, a medical student at the U of M, Twin Cities campus arrived at the Murray County Medical Center on July 18th in hopes of learning more about practicing medicine in a rural setting.
However this area is not unfamiliar to Charboneau. He grew up near Westbrook before moving to the Twin Cities. Dr. David Geier, MD at MCMC reached out to medical schools to encourage their students to job shadow at MCMC. Dr. Geier practices family medicine along with ER and trauma medicine.
According to Charboneau, the U of M Duluth has a program which allows students to work in rural hospitals for a two week period. The program helps to introduce students to rural medicine along with practicing clinical skills. Charboneau applied and was then given the choice of where he would like to practice. Slayton was his first choice.
