Effectively applying pressure with defensive trapping tactics, the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda freshmen girls’ basketball team earned an impressive 43-34 victory over Edgerton at Okabena last Monday evening, January 7.
The win by the Coyotes advanced them to the next round of the Red Rock Conference freshmen tournament. HL-O/Fulda will play top-seeded Southwest Minnesota Christian in the semifinals at Adrian on Saturday, February 2. Both semifinals, along with the third-place game and the championship, will be played that same day at Adrian.
Against the Flying Dutchmen of Edgerton Public, the Coyotes broke open a close game with strong run to finish the first half, earning a 25-17 lead.
In the second half, HL-O/Fulda’s press forced numerous Dutchmen turnovers and the Coyotes were able to stretch their scoreboard advantage to as many as 18 points before Edgerton rallied with a late surge of its own, slicing the final margin to nine.
