Murray County Commissioners continue to discuss vacant coordinator position

The Murray County Commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, January 15th. One of the items for consideration was to approve a contract with David Drown Assn. As the board isn’t sure whether they should hire another county coordinator or go with a county administrator, they had Ryan Erdmann from AMC join them. With him was Roxy Traxler from Sibley County who serves as their county administrator and had previously been a coordinator. The goal of their presentation was to give the board an idea of the difference between a coordinator and administrator. According the handout presented, the majority of Minnesota counties currently have an administrator in place. She explained the difference comes down to the fact the county coordinator is another department head whereas the administrator oversees the department heads. Traxler explained she has worked in both roles and said it’s just a matter of what works for Murray County. The biggest part of the job is to support and implement the board’s decisions.

The David Drown Assn. presented a proposal in which they will set up informational meetings with the staff and commissioners to help better understand the general roles of government. The Assn. will review current coordinator model of government and with the board and staff on implementing potential changes to that role and review potential administrative model of government. In the interim, DDA will work with the Human Resource Generalist to oversee interim staffing issues (job description changes, new hires). DDA will be available to members of the transition team as needed, participate in weekly meetings of the transition team and in meetings with the personnel committee as needed. The timeline provided covers each of the steps involved in the process with a projected start date for the new coordinator to begin June 3, 2019. Their proposal includes the developing a position profile, advertising and recruitment, initial screenings and review, background checks, facilitate the offer to the selected candidate and follow up. The cost for this service is $18,000 which includes all professional services and all expenses including travel, advertising, personality index, intellectual profile, background checks on all finalists. The all inclusive cost for transition assistance is an additional $8,000 for a total fee of $26,000.
