Coyote girls’ varsity plays good first half last week in 66-35 loss to Wolverines

Playing a solid all-around first half last Tuesday evening (January 15), the paired varsity girls’ basketball team of Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda High Schools battled strong against one of the best squads in the Red Rock Conference.

After earning a 35-23 halftime advantage, the visiting Wolverines of the pairing of Mountain Lake Area and Comfrey strolled to a 66-35 victory in a game played on HL-O’s court in Okabena.

“Our girls came out and played a great first half,” declared HLOF head coach Anna Brandt. “We hung right with them most of the half, despite making only one of six free throws.”

For the game, the Coyotes were five-of-13 on free throws (38.5 percent) and shot just 25 percent from the field, making 13-of-52 shots. HLOF was four-of-21 on three-point attempts (19 percent) and nine-of-31 on two-point field goals (29 percent).

Utilizing an impressive 18-0 coming out of the halftime break, the Wolverines extended their lead to 53-23 and maintained a huge scoreboard advantage until game’s end.
