Jaguars break away from Coyotes in second half

Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda junior guard Khloe Gehl led a strong first-half rally by the Coyotes last Friday evening (February 1) at Granada, sparking the varsity girls’ basketball team to an exciting 22-22 tie with the combination of Granada-Huntley-East Chain, Truman and Martin Luther High Schools.

Gehl scored all 10 of her points in the first half as she contributed greatly to the Coyotes’ rallying efforts from deficits of 9-2 and 17-9 to knot the score at 22-all by intermission. Khloe drilled a pair of three-pointers and scored a couple of two-point field goals in those first 18 minutes of action.

The host Jaguars, however, utilized their superior size and aggressiveness to pull away in the second half, claiming a 62-45 victory over the Coyotes, who are still seeking their first varsity win of the season. G-H-EC / Truman / Martin Luther improved to 5-14.

HL-O / Fulda (0-18) stayed close much of the second half, trailing by just three points (38-35) after a pair of key three-pointers by junior Kailee Haberman and senior McKenzie Evers. After that, the Jaguars polished off the victory with a game-clinching 22-10 run.
