Meyer family brings forward concerns during open forum

John Meyer appeared before the county commissioners during open forum to relay information regarding JD 22. They put together a packet of information which included past communications regarding the ditch in question. The Meyer family shared they had filed an improvement petition in January of 2017. According to them there has been numerous where repairs and over the last 12-13 years, $80,000 worth of repairs have been made. Meyer explained one of the questions raised in the previous meeting was why the ditch systems keeps getting widened out. According to him 20’-25’ down there is a sandy-loom type soil. When widening the ditch, this type of soil won’t stay and thus leads to sloughing of the sides. The south areas don’t seem have see this problem. However, he said the depth is only 12’-14’ deep. The average cuts going through their property is 23’-’25’ deep. Additionally Meyer shared documentation that when 10.57 acres were purchased from the Meyers by the county to widen the ditch in 2013, this included the buffer strip. He feels the 2-1 discussed by Mr. Brandel in last week’s meeting would require purchasing additional land in order meet compliance standards. Meyer also stated they’ve hired an engineer, at their own expense, to view the system. Additionally the family has spent over $109,000 in the last few years in the area in question to help stabilize and maintain it.  “It doesn’t work,” he said. “I hope that you can act on the petition at the March 21st meeting.”

Heidi Winter, auditor-treasurer, asked for a resolution to delegate authority for electronic fund transfers as well as monthly fund transfers. Both were approved. She also brought forward the need for a new siding and shingles on the garage located next to the Dinehart-Holt house. Included in her presentation was the project specifications stating it’s important to have something that might match the house. Winter will work with Commissioner Jens along with Janet Timmerman, museum, to develop specifications.
