Snow catches have been created by the Minnesota Department of Transportation in fields along the west side of US Highway 59 from Worthington to Fulda.
Randy Potts, Maintenance Supervisor with District 7, South Central Minnesota Region, shared that a motor grader with a v plow attached was used to push the snow to form the snow catches. He explained that more room was needed to accommodate the predicted snowfall for this past weekend. The snow catches also have the added benefit of keeping snow from drifting onto the roadways.
Rebecca Arndt, Public Affairs Coordinator, said, “The bigger part of the story about the snow catches is that the work requires local land owners to give us permission to do it.”
Arndt said that Nobles County Commissioner Justin Ahlers was a key person in helping DOT personnel to connect with land owners to receive the needed permission.
Not only were the snow catches created along Highway 59 between Worthington and Fulda, but also along Minnesota State Highway 60 from Worthington to Heron Lake.
“We greatly appreciate the landowners working with us regarding the snow catches. It will help with some of the work of maintaining the roads and keep it safer for motorists,” Arndt commented.
