Coyote girls win eight events; claim third team title of season

Once again getting multiple first-place performances by several athletes, Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda girls’ track and field squad displayed its exceptional all-around depth and won the team title of the Coyotes’ Invitational last Tuesday, April 16.

Competing under nearly ideal weather conditions for mid-April at the Murray County Central track in Slayton, the HL-O / Fulda girls dominated the small quadrangular meet, finishing far ahead of the other three participating teams with an impressive total of 108 points.

MCC was a distant second with 60.5 points, while Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (51) and Westbrook-Walnut Grove / Red Rock Central (50.5) were not far behind the Rebels.

It was third team victory of the young season for the Coyote girls, who also won the seven-team Wolverine Classic at Mountain Lake on April 5 and finished at the top of the standings of the eight-team Panther Invitational at Tracy on April 9.

“We are getting a lot of great performances throughout the lineup and have scored multiple places in several events,” exclaimed HL-O / Fulda head girls’ track and field coach Gary Hildebrandt. “It’s really been fun to fill out a full lineup for each meet and have so many girls contribute to our total team effort.”

The Invitational originally had 11 teams planning to participate, but with the soggy conditions following the previous week’s rain, sleet, ice and snow, the decision was made to trim the event down to just four teams. The quadrangular was scored 6-4-3-2-1 for the top five places in all 14 individual events and the four relays were scored 6-4-2 for the first three finishes.
