Imagine tasting a confection so delightful that it is like velvet on your tongue and the burst of flavor zings your taste buds into instant delight! That is what happens with every bite of a Dundee Love Cake made by new Fulda resident, Rebby Lee.
“For years, I have been perfecting food dishes, sweet treats, cakes and candies – especially my signature liqueur cakes,” Lee stated.
As a child, Lee would visit her grandparents, Minnie and A. R “Hup” Schmidt, at the Dundee Hotel in Dundee. The hotel was in the Schmidt family until 1980. Lee’s Aunt Gladis was a home economist for General Mills and taught American cooking for Betty Crocker all over the continent of Europe during the 1950’s. That was a inspiration to Lee, but even more so was the fact that her mother, Daisy, loved to create wonderful food dishes and Christmas candies. “She would share those candies with so many people. I remember mom making up box after box of goodies to share with so many people. Then, while I was in college, a friend’s mom made a Harvey Wallbanger cake. That inspired me, too. It was so delicious,” Lee stated.
Lee began making her signature cakes using fruit, juices, and liqueurs. The cakes are hand-beaten, carefully baked to just the right doneness, and once cooled, coated in a chocolate ganache. Because the cakes are made with a whole lot of loving care, it wasn’t long before Lee purchased a bundt pan in the shape of a heart. She began calling her cakes “Love Cakes”.
