Two first-place performances by sophomore distance ace Morgan Gehl at last Thursday’s (May 23) Section 3A East Sub-Section high school track and field meet at Redwood Falls, combined with numerous other high-placement finishes, produced a total of 110 points for the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda girls, who will be sending on 11 athletes to compete in this Thursday’s (May 30) sectional state-qualifying event at Luverne.
The Coyote girls will have competitors in 11 of the 18 events at Luverne, having multiple qualifiers in five of those events.
By racking up 110 points, spread among 15 girls, the Coyotes finished an impressive third in the final team standings, just two points from earning the second-place runner-up trophy. Host Redwood Valley won the eight-team meet’s first-place honors with 161 points, while Jackson County Central (112) edged HL-O / Fulda (110) for second.
Windom was fourth with 95 points, followed by Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (79), Mountain Lake Area / Comfrey (49), Wabasso (48) and Westbrook-Walnut Grove / Red Rock Central (40).
“Getting third out of eight teams and coming very close to second is quite an accomplishment for our very young, but talented and hard-working girls,” summed up HLOF head girls’ track and field coach Gary Hildebrandt. “Most importantly, we advanced 11 girls in 11 events to the section meet which is tremendous. Several of the girls qualified in multiple events and will have busy days at Luverne Thursday.”
