A stellar winning performance in the high jump by senior Sam Cheadle highlighted the boys’ results for Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda in last week’s (Thursday, May 23) East Sub-Section high school track and field meet at Redwood Falls.
Cheadle cleared a new personal record (PR) height of six-feet-three inches (6-3) to earn the high jump gold medal and advance to this week’s Section 3A state-qualifying meet at Luverne on Thursday, May 30.
“Sam had a great day — his best ever — in the high jump, winning that event again,” summed up HL-O / Fulda head boys’ track and field coach Brad Holinka. “He’s been consistently going over six feet in recent meets, but this is the first time that Sam has cleared 6-3, which is really good. It’s the best height of all three sub-section meets.”
Three athletes — Jordan Mertens of Redwood Valley, Maverick Conn of Lac qui Parle Valley / Dawson-Boyd and Christian Riley of Montevideo — each cleared 6-1 in their sub-section meets.
Cheadle also advanced to the section meet in the triple jump by placing third at Redwood with a fine leap of 40-5.5.
Senior Gabe Spittle and sophomore Zach Thier both will join Cheadle at Luverne, participating in field events as each placed fourth in sub-section competition. Spittle scored five points for the Coyotes in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 10-9 and Thier heaved the shot put a PR distance of 43-8 to earn advancement.
HL-O / Fulda’s 3,200-meter (4 x 800) relay team qualified with a fifth-place time of 9:45.38 in a very close race between fourth (9:44.54) and sixth (9:48.94). Running for the Coyotes were senior Carlos Juarez, junior Lukas Stapek, freshman Adrian Schwaller and senior Christian Juarez.
HL-O / Fulda scored a total of 47 points in the eight-team meet, getting nine more points from a trio of other placing relays and eight more in four other individual events.
