Opening up Section 3A tournament play on Wednesday, May 22, the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda golfers began the playoff season. A cold and wet day met the golfers as they teed up at GreatLIFE in Worthington.
The Coyote boys had a great day, shooting 364 to take top honors for the day. Wabasso (386), Southwest Christian/Edgerton (392) and Murray County Central (399) were the second, third and fourth place teams.
Payton Marquardt led the Coyots, placing third overall with an 87 on the 18-holecourse. Joe Fischer was just two strokes behind, placing fourth with 89.
Cory Renneke came in with a 92, followed by Ethan Koep (96), Isaiah Schmid (97) and Tyler Madison (124) for the Coyotes.
On the girls side, the Coyotes finished in fourth, sending their team on to day two of the tournament. HLOF shot 444, with MCC (407), Adrian (432) and Westbrook-Walnut Grove (437) finishing in the top three spots.
Meakin Bang was HLOF’s lead golfer, carding a 107 and placing seventh in the first day of the tournament. Lexy Ruesch was one stroke behind, in eighth with 108.
Elly Bang and Samantha Freking shot 114 and 115 respectively, followed by Kelli Renneke with 140 to complete the Coyote team.
The top four teams from the first day of the section tournament, with all their team members, qualify to continue in the tournament. The top 25% of the other golfers (not on the top teams) also qualify.
The Section 3A golf meet continues at GreatLIFE in Worthington on Friday, May 31. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the meet was postponed due to excessive water on the course from the heavy rains on Monday.
