Raider Ramblings 8-7-2019

The weather has been very challenging and it’s a toss up for everyone from contractors and farmers putting up hay to folks trying to get out and camp.  The buildings are coming along fine and we have most all of our hiring complete for the year.  We still need some custodial help and we are saying goodbye to Steph Strenge after many years of loyal service to the district teaching in the High School.

All interested patrons and especially those that own farmland are invited to attend the first hour of our regular board meeting on Monday August 12th at 6:00 p.m.  Representatives from a school finance firm will be explaining funding options for large scale, needed updates on our buildings.  One of the options that I am very interested in is called facility maintenance bonds.  We can tackle many of these big projects with all taxes staying the same except for the farmland which actually goes down due to the ag tax credit!  This is kind of exciting because it appears that we can get a bunch done and it does not hurt any future tax levels in the district.  I NEED FOLKS FAR AND WIDE TO ATTEND SO THAT WE CAN GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT THE GREAT THINGS THAT CAN HAPPEN WITH OUR FACILITIES IN FULDA!  See you at 6:00 p.m. on Monday August 12th in the high school.  (I’ll have treats)

At our board planning session last week we visited about a range of items from technology and curriculum to facilities and enrollments.  While we’ll miss the employees that left, we are excited for our new hires and the energy and expertise they will bring.  Our goal is well rounded kids with strong academics, school involvement and healthy social emotional skills.  Our buildings have many things that need our attention that have been put off for years.  The list includes: new boilers at the high school, roofing at both facilities, windows at the elementary, sidewalks at the elementary, a new entrance at the elementary and other tidbits that continually pop up.  As I have said many times before, we have VERY NICE facilities here in Fulda and we need to keep them up and stay ahead of the game.

Updates on the School include:

• This wet weather the past couple years have been very hard on our athletic fields and areas behind the high school.  It simply won’t dry out and we will begin the process of getting folks in to get tile fixed / installed and to bring in a jetter to clean drains and lines under the high school to assist with water issues around the building.

• We have a few doors to replace this fall and winter.  A couple in high school by the shop to take care of Fire Marshall issues.  A couple doors on the west side of pool simply because the old ones have lived their lifespan.  A few doors in the lowest level of old elementary building to match the newer ones installed with the lunchroom remodel a couple years ago and to “spruce up the look of the hall” for the many patrons that walk through every day especially for preschool.

• Our enrollment is looking to be up AGAIN!!  Not only do we have a larger Kindergarten class coming in to replace the small senior class but there are some new families moving in as well as a few kids that have attended elsewhere and are coming back!!

• Colby Pack will begin his duties this week as the Activities director and the Community Education director.  I wanted to have all of our happenings around the school coming out of one office and I think Colby along with Holly and the Summer Rec coaches will do a great job of keeping all of us “busy” with activities.  Huge thanks to Jessica Mitchell for handling the programs for so many years and being such an advocate for our community!

• Things are looking good in Fulda and I am looking forward to a great beginning to the school year!
