Barbecuing hobby leads to catering and restaurant business

Slow smoked ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, smoked sirloin sandwich, brisket,  pulled pork nachos –  the list goes on, but these are just some of the taste-bud tempting menu selections available at On Q BBQ in Round Lake, Minnesota.

Jodi Bentele, whose professional career revolved around sales and marketing, never dreamed that she would one day own and operate a barbecue catering business and restaurant. “Most of my business career, up to a year ago, was in sales and marketing. I was ready for a change. A hobby for my husband, Bruce,  and myself,  is barbecuing. It is a hobby that has turned into a good business opportunity,” Bentele stated. “It takes a big leap of faith to give up a steady pay check that you know is coming to go to owning your own business.”

The Bentele’s had two major life events to celebrate in 2010 – their youngest son’s graduation from high school and Bruce’s 50th birthday. “That was our first big jump into smoking. We smoked 400 pounds of ribs and 75 pork butts for the two parties,” Bentele explained. “From there, the requests for our smoked meats started with groom suppers and has continued to grow.”
