The Murray County commissioners met in regular session on Tuesday, August 20th. After approval of the minutes, warrants and auditor warrants. The ditch bills were presented and approved. Additionally, Heidi Winter, auditor-treasurer, shared the 2019 MCIT dividend. Winter explained contributions are paid at the beginning of the year. From there, MCIT looks at the user rate and determines if a dividend is in order. Murray County received $89,450 which was down from last year’s amount of $100,235. Winter reminded the board, however, the dividend is not necessarily guaranteed from year to year. The dividend is expected to arrive mid-November. These monies will then be spread across the budgets who contribute to MCIT.
Travis Radke, ditch authority, appeared before the board with two ditch repair considerations: CD 40, Belfast Twp. Sec. 30 and CD 65, Holly Twp. Sec. 32. Both were approved for repair.
Lars Johanssen, representing the Shetek Area Lakes Association as their president, came before the board to share information and request from their organization. He shared documentation stating they are not considered a non-profit organization with the IRS.
As part of his presentation Johanssen spoke on the Lake Shetek and Beaver Creek Watersheds. He explained the group, over 400 members, is expanding quickly. Johanssen also shared they are meeting with members of Lake Yankton to possibly form sub-committees. Johanssen said drainage for Lake Yankton, located in Lyon County, has stopped. He shared a map showing all of the 77 named lakes in Murray County. According to him, several of those lakes are drained. Johanssen believes this where a good share of the problem is in regards to flooding at Lake Shetek.
