HL-O/F earns 42-28 victory over Edgerton

Running the ball for 222 yards as a team and scoring at least one touchdown in every quarter last Friday night (September 20), the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes earned a 42-28 victory over the Edgerton Flying Dutchmen in a 9-man high school football game at Edgerton.

Five players combined to score six touchdowns for the Coyotes, who led 12-0 after the first quarter and had a 28-14 lead at halftime.

HL-O/F added a pair of second-half touchdowns and maintained a 14-point advantage in improving to 2-2 on the season.

“This was a really big win for our program,” Coyotes co-head coach Jonathon Curry said. “We came out early and did exactly what we needed to do, getting up by a couple of scores with a great first quarter. Our defense played great once again and we made big plays all night.”

The Coyotes scored at the 6:46 mark of the first quarter when Eli Fest completed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Zach Thier. The two-point conversion was no good, but HL-O/F jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead.

Fest scored on HL-O/F’s next possession, scrambling for a 43-yard touchdown run on an option play with 2:05 to go in the opening period. The two-point conversion was unsuccessful, leaving the Coyotes with a 12-0 advantage.

Edgerton, though, answered with two second-quarter touchdowns to take a 14-12 lead late in the first half. A 10-yard touchdown by Jeffrey Burvee with 11:24 remaining (two-point conversion was good) and a one-yard touchdown by Nolan Buckridge with 2:32 to play (two-point conversion was no good) put the Flying Dutchmen on top — momentarily.
