Residents of Fulda heard the sirens from the Fulda Fire Department trucks many times during the past week. To begin with, they probably wondered what was happening. Then, those who have lived here for a number of years, realized that the sirens were signaling a ride back to school for elementary students.
Each year during Fire Prevention Week, members of the Fulda Fire Department take time to educate local children about fire prevention and awareness. This year’s theme was “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape.” “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”
Each class from Fulda Elementary School is invited to the fire hall during Fire Prevention Week for a few minutes of education provided by the firefighters.
Although their lessons vary according to the age of the class, there is always a central theme – that of teaching the children what to do in case they are in a burning structure and can’t get out. As well, the firefighters talk in great length with the students about having their parents check the smoke alarms in their home one time per month, just to insure that they are fully functional.
There is also a lot of fun educational learning that happens. As Fire Chief David Baumhoefner visits with the students about smoke alarms, he encourages each one to press the test button. Instinctively, the students’ eyes widened and their hands go over their ears. But, each one is eager to test the alarm!
