HL-O/Fulda scores three second-half TDs in loss to top-ranked MLA

After scoring on a long, sustained drive in the first quarter, the state’s top-ranked Mountain Lake Area Wolverines erupted for five touchdowns in the second quarter and ran away with an impressive 62-20 victory over the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes in a 9-man high school football game last Friday night (October 11) at Alex Fisher Field in Fulda.

MLA, which improved to a perfect 7-0, built a 56-0 lead early in the third quarter. HL-O/F (2-5) outscored the Wolverines 20-6 after that on Homecoming night at Fulda High School.

“This was a tough game against a really tough opponent,” Coyotes co-head coach Jonathon Curry said. “I was really proud of how our kids battled in the first quarter and then again in the second half — we really made them earn their first touchdown with a long drive. Unfortunately, in the second quarter, we saw why MLA is the #1 team in the state — they’re so explosive, so fast, and so strong.”

MLA scored on the game’s opening possession, as Mace Herrig capped a long Wolverine drive with a touchdown run at the 6:29 mark of the first quarter. The two-point conversion was good, giving MLA an 8-0 lead.

The Wolverines scored on all four of their possessions in the second quarter — including two touchdowns accounted by quarterback Abraham Stoesz — and also returned a Coyote fumble for a touchdown to build leads of 14-0, 22-0, 30-0, 36-0 and 42-0 (halftime).

Two more MLA touchdowns early in the third quarter made it 56-0, but the Coyotes got going after that. Eli Fest connected with Tyler Madison for a 31-yard touchdown, and Matt Madsen added the two-point conversion to make it 56-8 late in the third quarter.

Fest found Brandon Hinkeldey for a 10-yard touchdown to start the fourth quarter, and Jonathan Hoy tossed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Koep at the 6:57 mark to make the score 56-20.
