Jake Dekker presented Veteran’s Quilt

Jake Dekker, a veteran of the United States Army and World War II, was presented with a special veterans quilt on Friday afternoon.

Peggy and Gary Dekker, Pfafftown, North Carolina, Joan Dekker, Worthington, and Melodee and Dean Balk, Cresco, Iowa, were all visiting Jake on Friday afternoon, enabling them to gather for the presentation of the quilt.

Joan is Jake’s sister-in-law. Peggy is Joan’s daughter, and Melodee is Jake’s daughter.

Peggy’s sewing, Bible study and prayer group, the Sewing Ladies Ministry of Calvary Baptist Church, of King, North Carolina, sew dresses, shopping bags and many  other fabric items for missions. As the items are sewn, the ladies are in prayer for whomever will receive their donations. The items are sent to a large number of countries throughout the world.

This year, as the Sewing Ladies were discussing what mission they should sew for, the decision was made to make quilts for the Wounded Warriors project. “We took a few names to make quilts for and ended up making 19 quilts all together. I asked if I could do one for my Uncle Jake, a veteran of World War II,  and they said yes,” Peggy shared. “I have never made a quilt before, but they talked me through the process. For the fabric for the quilts, we asked that everyone go through their closets and find any patriotic or red, white, and blue fabrics.”
