Completing its first season as a paired high school volleyball program, five Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda varsity players were recently honored by the opposing nine head coaches of the Red Rock Conference for their contributing roles in the Coyotes’ fine 7-2 record in league matches.
Junior middle hitter Hailey Liepold, junior outside hitter Meakin Bang and sophomore setter Elly Bang were each selected as All-Conference players, while senior middle hitter Maddie Ruesch and junior libero Grace Kilian were both given Honorable Mention honors.
Liepold, a repeat All-Conference choice, was also chosen as the Coyotes’ Offensive Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Kilian was tabbed the team’s Defensive MVP.
Ruesch, a fiery team leader, was honored with the Team Spirit Award, sophomore defensive specialist and serving leader Chrissy Hermeling was named the team’s Most Improved Player, and senior serving specialist Kelsey Fuerstenberg was given the Coyote Character Award.
Fuerstenberg, along with Ruesch and fellow seniors Becca Salentiny, Kailee Haberman and Becca Funk were presented with Academic All-State honors as each of five deserving student-athletes have cumulative GPA’s (grade-point averages) of 3.8 or better.
