In the first season as a paired program a year ago, the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes struggled to win many girls’ basketball games.
HL-O/F finished the 2018-2019 season with a record of 1-25, as it was a year of learning and getting experience playing together as a new group.
The Coyotes will look to turn things around this year under the direction of new head coach Andy Oakland, who was the head coach of the Fulda boys for the previous two seasons.
“We are trying to build a foundation of what we want to become as a team,” Oakland said. “Things might progress slowly, but we want to make improvements and get better as the year goes on. We want to build on each game and each practice, working on our fundamentals and overall team concepts.”
A total of 27 girls in grades 9-12 are listed on HL-O/F’s roster, with 14 on the varsity and 13 on the B and C squads. There are six senior veterans looking to lead the Coyotes this year.
Senior point guard Khloe Gehl (5-4) returns as one of the main ball-handlers, while senior forwards Kailee Haberman (5-8) and Kelsey Fuerstenberg (5-8) bring experience and versatility as returning post players.
