There is plenty of enthusiasm in the air, as Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda continue their sports pairing agreement and add boys’ basketball to the fold for the 2019-2020 season.
Colby Pack, who spent eight seasons as Fulda’s head coach from 2009-2010 to 2016-2017, returns to the sideline and is excited about the potential that the new team has as one unit.
“We had a great first week of practice and are really looking forward to having a fun season,” Pack said. “We are the last team to start the new pairing and are trying to set the standard for Coyote basketball for years to come. These young men have a great work ethic and are coming together nicely as a new group.”
Neither HL-O (4-20) nor Fulda (5-22) won a lot of games last winter, but both schools return lots of all-around athletes who have been playing together in fall and spring sports for the last couple of years now.
Senior forward Tyler Madison and junior guard Eli Fest return as All-Red Rock Conference performers from a year ago and are expected to lead this year’s team, which is loaded with several other players with varsity experience.
Madison averaged 18.3 points (fifth highest), 10.6 rebounds (second highest) and 4.7 assists (fourth highest) per game against conference opponents last season to lead the Fulda Raiders.
“Tyler is a great athlete and understands the game very well,” Pack said. “He is a natural leader on the court and does so many things well. He attacks the basket well and it will be fun to watch him score in transition, with the way we hope to play.”
