Wolverines pull away from Coyotes, 60-38 in tough game; Hermeling scores 15 points for HL-O/F

Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey used a big second half last Friday night (December 6) to pull away from a 24-20 halftime lead and claim a 60-38 victory over the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes in a Red Rock Conference high school girls’ basketball game at Fulda.

MLA/C outscored HL-O/F 36-18 in the final 18 minutes, after the Coyotes rallied from a slow start and played well in the first half.

“We struggled out of the gate, which was disappointing because we had been starting games well prior to this one,” Coyotes head coach Andy Oakland said. “But our defense kept us in it, and about midway through the first half, we found a rhythm on offense and were able to knock down some shots.”

The Coyotes did not score until about the 10-minute mark of the first half, but Kailee Haberman (six rebounds, three assists) — who scored all 10 of her points before halftime — hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored two other baskets to help keep HL-O/F within striking distance.

It was 24-20 at the break, but MLA/C was able to gradually pull away in the second half. Margo Stoesz and Brooke Naas led the way for the Wolverines, scoring 21 and 17 points, respectively.
