In a game in which neither team led by more than seven points, the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes prevailed with a 65-61 victory over the Madelia Blackhawks in non-conference high school boys’ basketball action last Tuesday night (December 3) in Okabena.
Zach Thier (five rebounds, four assists) scored 17 points to lead the Coyotes, as he hit a key 3-pointer late in the game to give HL-O/F the lead and help the newly-formed team claim its first victory of the season — and its first ever as a combined program.
“We made some big plays down the stretch after falling behind by five points late in the game,” Coyotes head coach Colby Pack said. “We did not play well overall against Madelia, but we were able to get enough defensive stops and make just enough free throws to hang on in a back-and-forth ballgame.”
Tyler Madison charted a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double for the Coyotes. He had a critical 3-point play just prior to Thier’s late 3-pointer to help HL-O/F in the closing minutes.
Brandon Hinkeldey also scored in double figures with 10 points for the Coyotes, while Eli Fest had a fine all-around game with eight points, nine assists and six rebounds.
Madelia’s Ja’Sean Glover scored a game-high 27 points and helped keep the Blackhawks in the game from start-to-finish.
