With four players scoring in double figures, the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes used a balanced attack and broke away in the second half to claim a 68-58 victory over the Murray County Central Rebels in a Red Rock Conference high school boys’ basketball game last Tuesday night (December 10) in Fulda.
Tyler Madison (18 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals), Zach Thier (16 points, six rebounds), Brandon Hinkeldey (14 points) and Eli Fest (10 points, 10 assists, seven steals and six rebounds) combined to score 58 of the Coyotes’ 68 points.
HL-O/F led by just two (31-29) at halftime, using an 11-0 run late in the first half to take control. Two 3-pointers by Thier, a 3-point play by Hinkeldey and a layup off a steal by Madison turned a 24-17 deficit at the 6:17 mark into a 28-24 lead with 4:15 remaining in the half.
MCC had earlier leads of 15-10, 17-13 and 21-15, as the Rebels led for much of the time in the middle stages of the first half.
“Give MCC credit, as they came ready to play and gave us a good battle,” Coyotes head coach Colby Pack said. “We made a nice run late in the first half and then played a very good second half of team basketball. We were able to extend the lead by making things difficult for them defensively and speeding up the tempo of the game.”
