Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda’s C-Squad girls’ basketball team played a pair of games last week, coming up on the short end of the final score each time.
The Coyotes traveled west to Edgerton on Thursday (December 12) and were defeated by Southwest Minnesota Christian, 42-17. The girls played Luverne the next night (Friday, the 13th) at Okabena and battled the Cardinals well in a 34-21 loss after trailing by a mere point (15-16) at halftime.
Foreign-exchange student Helma Poeppel was HLOF’s leading scorer for the week as she netted a total of 14 points (six against the Eagles and eight against the Cardinals) between the two games.
Freshman guard Ellie Sheldahl drilled a pair of three-pointers and scored eight points against Southwest Christian, while Poeppel (six), Addison Fisher (two) and Kelli Renneke (one) also put in points for the Coyotes.
Against Luverne, Renneke and Poeppel each scored eight points to lead HLOF. Fisher (three) and Elise Rostomily (two) combined for five more Coyote points. Renneke and Fisher each made a trio of free throws in the game and Renneke connected on a 3-point shot.
