Scoring the first eight points of the game last Friday night (December 13), the Luverne Cardinals took the lead early and captured a 52-25 victory over the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes in non-conference high school girls’ basketball action in Okabena.
Luverne extended its quick 8-0 lead to 26-15 by halftime and then outscored HL-O/F 26-10 in the second half to claim a 27-point win on the road.
“Luverne was able to start off fast, but we found our rhythm shortly after and were able to get going,” Coyotes head coach Andy Oakland said. “Kelsey (Fuerstenberg) got a few offensive rebounds and putbacks, while Chrissy (Hermeling) and Khloe (Gehl) hit a couple of 3s to give us a spark. Unfortunately, we did not get enough defensive stops in a row to get all the way back in it.”
Hermeling hit three 3-pointers and led the Coyotes with nine points, three rebounds and two steals. Both Gehl and Fuerstenberg (nine rebounds) scored five points for HL-O/F.
