Vaulting out of the gate with a 10-0 start and finishing the game on a 17-8 run, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda B-Squad girls’ basketball team claimed an impressive 38-29 victory over Cedar Mountain at Okabena last Thursday evening, December 19.
It was the third win of the season for the B-Squad girls (3-4), who have also defeated Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley (33-16) and Westbrook-Walnut Grove (35-26).
Sparking the triumph over the Cedar Mountain Cougars was a red-hot 77.2 percent free throw shooting performance as the Coyotes netted 17-of-22 attempts from the line.
Leading that effort was Faith White, a 5-7 sophomore guard, who scored 17 points in the second half and finished with 23 for the game. White made 14-of-18 free throws (77.8 percent). She also scored a trio of two-point baskets and drilled a three-pointer.
The Coyotes held a three-point lead (16-13) at halftime and broke from a 21-21 tie midway through the second half by scoring 17 of the game’s last 25 points.
“We scored the first 10 points, shot free throws extremely well and ended the game strong,” summed up Coyotes B-Squad Coach Jonathon Curry. “Faith scored 23 points, which was huge. She got fouled often and made most of her free throw, which sure helped.”
In addition to White, the Coyotes also received eight points from 6-1 sophomore forward Taryn Evers, five points from 5-6 sophomore guard Skylar Fisher and two points from 5-9 sophomore forward Taylor Haberman. Evers was two-of-two at the line and Fisher was one-of-two.
