Communities benefit from the acts of volunteers

This week, the nation is celebrating National Volunteer Week. The dates are April 19th – April 25th.

National Volunteer week began in 1974 when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order as a way to recognize and celebrate the efforts of volunteers throughout the nation. Since that time, the efforts to recognize volunteers has continued to grow. Each April, charities and communities work together to reinforce the week’s official theme of “Celebrating People in Action”. National Volunteer Week is sponsored by the Points of Light Institute. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Shining a Light on the People and Causes that Inspire Us to Serve”.

Within Fulda, there are many volunteers who do good for others on a daily basis. Much of the time, these silent volunteers are never recognized for the light that they bring into others’ lives. Instantly coming to mind are those who deliver Meals on Wheels. Not only are they delivering nutritious meals to those who are home-bound, but they are also a point of contact to ensure that those who are receiving the meals are doing ok.
