Cory Brown and Eric Grunden were wrapping up their work day on Friday morning – not because they wanted to, but because the power washer had failed. Brown was very sure that the piece of equipment would probably need replacement. Even so, the two men took time to explain what they have been doing to give Fulda Elementary School with a very important “face lift”.
Brown is the owner of Prostain It, located at 647 180th Avenue, Slayton, Minnesota. He is well-known for his work in restoring stone and metal.
“We are using an alkali wash to remove the mold and mildew from the limestone,” Brown stated. “Over time, the mold and mildew continues to build up, coating the limestone. I understand that there were some large trees in front of the building, as well, and they can contribute to the coating on the limestone, too.”
The process of washing the building takes time, as each inch of the exterior of the school needs to be power washed with the alkali wash. Brown and Grunden are currently working on the front of Fulda Elementary School, and are about half way done with what is known as the “old” portion of the building. On the front, they started on the south end (gymnasium end) and are working northward. The result is a brighter, lighter, more inviting look. With the black mold and mildew now absent on areas that have already been washed, the architecture of the building is definitely more visible.
