I have been strolling through memory lane via my recipe box this past week. It needed thinning out, so I decided to check out each recipe and see if it still sounded useful.
After all, some of these “at home” days I find myself searching for a project that has needed doing for some time now. This was one of them.
I hadn’t gone through too many recipe cards when I began seeing names of family and older friends from our church popping up at the end of some recipes. I realized that many of these were from my bridal shower, almost fifty-two years ago. In fact, a few of them are from friends who no longer are with us. Including a few in my mom’s handwriting, which are real treasures. I chuckled over a couple that had been written by both of my daughters, Ranell and Melissa, when they were growing up, written in their best grade school penmanship. Those, too, were special to find hidden in my conglomeration of cards.
I spent one full morning looking and sorting, pausing a couple times to make a phone call to the person whose name I found written beside the recipe. It turned out to be a fun time to reconnect with some long time friends. One of the recipes was titled “ Family Pie”. It was given to me by Katie, a wonderful older lady that had attended my shower, but has been gone for many years. Her son is a friend of ours, and I had been wondering how he was contending with all of this CO-VID 19 change. His wife, a good friend of mine for many years, passed away from cancer several years ago. When I took a few minutes to call him, I shared how I had just found this recipe from his mom. The more I thought about its content, it seemed to be a good recipe for all of us, especially as we spend many hours at home with our immedite families.
Family Pie
One handful of forgiveness
One heaping cupful of love
A full pound of unselfishness
Mix together smoothly with complete faith in God.
Add two tablespoons of wisdom
One teaspoon of good nature for flavor
Then sprinkle generously with thoughtfulness.
This makes a wonderful family pie!
Good blessings to all families as you continue to abide by our state’s mandates to bring us through this difficult time. My granddaughter, Selah, and I looked for a park to play in today. We ended up back home playing in the backyard with some balls and sidewalk chalk. My hope is that we will soon be free to mingle and see those in person that need a visit or a friendly hug.
