The vision for a mural depicting Slayton and the surrounding area came to life this past week. Twin Cities native Greg Preslicka gathered ideas presented him and made them come to life. Preslicka spent six days crafting a brightly colored mural that now adorns Pocket Park on Slayton’s Broadway Avenue.

The Slayton Community Mural project was recently awarded a grant for $11,652 from the Southwest Minnesota Arts Council. The funds allowed the group to move forward with their vision for a mural on the wall adjourning pocket park on Broadway Avenue.

The idea which originated with the Monday Study Club expanded to include a number of other people who aided in the two year process.

On Wednesday, May 27th the white wall on the north side of the Murray County News was prepped by David Slavik who often is involved in restoration work. Holes were filled in, the wall primed and sealed. The following day artist Greg Preslicka arrived on the scene.

Over the course of planning the committee conducted a survey to determine what area residents might like to see on the mural. Three artists were contacted and interviewed as part of the mural process. They were given specs of what the committee had hopes for. In turn, the artists developed images for the committee’s preview. Member helping to bring this process to life included Carisa Clarke, Colleen Gengler, Karen Tommeraasen, Lori Stainer, Chad Reker, Gaeland Priebe, Josh Malchow and Marlys Knuth.
