Adrian man dies due to boating accident on Lake Shetek

On Saturday evening, June 13th at 8:09 p.m., Murray County Dispatch received numerous reports of a collision between two boats on North Lake Shetek.  

The collision occurred between a 2000 Tige boat, operated by Matthew Slater, and a 2018 Tracker boat, operated by Brian Bergling.  Bergling was the only occupant on the 2018 Tracker Boat.  The 2000 Tige boat had 11 total occupants on board at the time of the accident.  Two individuals on the 2000 Tige boat were taken to area hospitals and their conditions are unknown at this time.  

Logan Nelson of Adrian, an occupant in the 2000 Tige Boat, was thrown from the vessel.  The Murray County Sheriff’s Office, assisting agencies, and numerous civilians aided in the search for Logan Nelson late into the night.  The search was discontinued for the evening due to darkness and wind. 

On Sunday, June 14th at first light the search and recovery effort resumed. At approximately 11:38 a.m. Logan Nelsons deceased body was recovered after an extensive search of the accident scene.  

The Murray County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the following agencies; Tracy Ambulance, Lake Shetek First Responders, Currie Fire Dept., North Memorial Air Care, Tracy Fire Dept., Walnut Grove Fire Dept, Slayton Fire Dept, Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota Dept. of Natural Resources, LeClaires from Currie, and The Codington County Water Rescue Team (Watertown, SD). 

No further information will be given at this time as the accident is still under investigation. 

According to Logan Nelson‘s obituary published by Dingman Funeral Home, he was 22 years of age. He is the son of Gregg and Denise Nelson, Adrian and has one sister, McKenley Nelson and a brother, Preston Nelson – both of Adrian. Also mourning his loss is his fiancee, Krista Motzko also of Adrian.

He was a member of the 2016 Adrian High graduating class. Logan loved to hunt everything – with deer and turkey being his favorite. He also hunted antelope, pheasants, and prairie dogs. He enjoys sports while in high school including football and wrestling – having qualified for the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament his senior year. Logan had just completed his bachelor’s degree in agriculture science from SDSU in Brookings, SD and was currently employed with Thier Construction of Adrian.

Visitation is scheduled from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 18th and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday, June 19th. The service will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. at St. Adrian Church.
