Fulda Knowledge Bowl Coach
April 7, 2017 – Fulda Knowledge Bowl Team 1 placed 18th at the State Knowledge Bowl Meet in Brainerd, MN. They earned the trip to the state meet this year by winning both the sub-region meet in Jackson on March 3 and the Region 8 Finals on March 10. This is the third time in school history a team from Fulda has qualified, and, as far as we know, the first time a Fulda team became Region 8 champions.
Fulda 1 (Jason VanDyke, Bailey Onken, Frances Piper, and Sam Cheadle) won 4 of 6 invitationals during the regular season, a school record. (Invitationals are regular season meets with 21 to 42 teams participating.) “It was really fun,” said Bailey Onken, “because we could joke around and still focus—and it was fun to be successful.” Unlike last year, when Fulda struggled at sub-regions to place third and then staged a dramatic come-from-behind at the region finals to advance to state, this year the more experienced team seemed in the control the entire time: in both sub-regions and region finals, Fulda was on top through all the rounds and won by comfortable margins.
