Loren Carlson was named Fulda Education Association’s 2017 Friend of Education and was recognized at the Great Southwest United Banquet which was held at Key Largo on Lake Shetek on Wednesday, May 3rd.
FHS band and choir instructor, Matt Saxman, introduced Carlson as the FHS Friend of Education during the banquet. He shared the following information about Carlson.
“Loren Carlson is a retired math teacher. He taught math for 3 years in Iowa and 38 years here in Fulda, and was a well-loved teacher by staff and students alike. He retired 3 years ago, but has continued to help out in our schools in many ways.
He has returned to the high school as a Guidance Counselor, helping students enter the workforce or college. These services would not be possible without him.
Loren has also continued teaching in the schools through subbing in math and other classes. He also organizes and teaches an ACT prep class, to prepare the juniors for that important exam.
Loren has written very helpful letters to the editor in support of our school district and the role of public education in our community.
He continues helping with a wide variety of sports and extra-curriculars, such as coaching golf, refereeing Jr. High volleyball and basketball, running the score board and clock for varsity basketball, and announcing line-ups and play-by-play at varsity football games.
Loren is also a mentor to new staff. He was my staff mentor when I started teaching at Fulda Public Schools. Even though I’ve been teaching there for 4 years now, he often finds time to stop in and see how I’m doing, and also to give me advice to “keep me in line”
Loren Carlson was a successful and well-loved teacher during his career, and continues to be an incredible asset to our Fulda Schools, and also a Friend of Education.”
