Joy in the Journey 6-7-2017

Wow..summer temps. have hit!  Guess it is good for these new crops starting  to pop up and grow, whether in the farm fields or nearby gardens.  Also nice for all the graduation parties still happening in the area.  Or a summer wedding or anniversary party!

One of the parties we attended had this breakfast punch recipe that really was refreshing.  Karen McDaniel from rural Brewster gave me permission to share it with all of you.  It not only tastes delicious, but is such a pretty yellow color for the spring and summer seasons.

Breakfast Slush

1 can frozen lemonade ( 12 oz size)

1 can frozen orange juice ( 12 oz. size) ( Do not add the water…)

1 large can of pineapple juice (not frozen)

2 cups water, steeped with 2 tea bags for 5 minutes

5 cups water with 2 cups sugar dissolved  (boil until sugar dissolves)

Mix all of the above together and freeze.  An ice cream pail works well for this.

*** When ready to serve, put the frozen slush into a punch bowl and ADD a 2 liter bottle of 7-UP.

With the weather so warm and sunny, my youngest granddaughter, Selah, and I had fun out on the front lawn.  She was here staying with us for a few hours, and I had a little weeding to do  on the yard.  Her daddy, Peter, was also here and really laughed when I drug an old playpen outside for her to play in while I worked.  He didn’t remember it from years gone by, and at first asked me, “What is that??”

I assured him that Selah would be safely “contained” so she wouldn’t get hurt, but still enjoy the warm breeze and the outdoors that she loves.  With some toys and being able to stand up and flop back down dozens of times…she grinned her big smile at me over and over.

No wonder Peter didn’t recognize the playpen.  It is over fifty years old, having been handed down to us when our oldest daughter was born after my youngest brother used it!  However, just because it is old, doesn’t mean it isn’t useful.  Selah didn’t care at all.  She was as happy as could be.

This little person has given us hours of entertainment the last few months as we get to see her grow up right before our eyes.  We have not had that blessing with our other grandkids, living farther away.  She has just learned how to climb the stair steps, so that keeps me on my toes.  And we love to watch the delight in her eyes when she sees the high chair appear into the dining room.  One of her favorite activities is eating!

Such a joy to enjoy the simpler things in life with her, inside the world of a child.  I can’t wait to see her explore the “zero entry” part of the local swimming pool in the next few weeks.  But I know we will really have to keep our eyes peeled in that situation!
