In memory of John Cuperus

1920-John Cuperus-2017

John Cuperus, the son of Gerrit and Evelyn (Buwalda) Cuperus, was born on August 2, 1920 near Hogebietum, Friesland. He came to the United States on June 23, 1923 with his parents, and siblings, Annie, Burend and Gerben at three years of age on the Nieuwey Amsterdam ship. The family entered through Ellis Island and traveled by train to Ocheydan, Iowa, where they stayed until moving west of Lakefield, Minnesota then Okabena. In 1931 the family rented a farm near Dundee, Minnesota where John lived and attended school. John was united in marriage to Loraine Van Dasselaar on February 15, 1946. After their marriage they lived on the family farm west of Fulda, Minnesota for 12 years, then purchased a farm southwest of Fulda where they lived until their retirement in 1984. They then moved to a home on the west side of Fulda. John remained at home after Lorraine passed away on December 11, 2006. He moved to the Maple View Estates in December of 2011 and in May of 2014 he entered the Maple Lawn Nursing Home and passed away there on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at the age of 97. He was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church in Fulda. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, traveling and hunting.

Survivors include his two sons, Gaylen (Marlene) Cuperus, Iona, MN and David (Lisa) Cuperus, Fulda, MN; daughter, Carol (Bob) Steuck, Maple Grove, MN; 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter Joan Pederson; two grandchildren: April Pederson and Ryan Steuck and one great-grandchild Courtney Pederson.

Funeral services were held at the First Presbyterian Church Fulda, MN at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 23, 2017 with Dan Beerman officiating.  The organist was Norma Meyeraan. The soloist was Lloyd Winter. The pallbearers were his grandchildren. Interment at Prairie Hill Cemetery Fulda, MN. The Totzke Funeral Home in Fulda assisted the family with arrangements.
