Evelyn Lucker was born on September 4, 1920 in Iona, Minnesota to George and Mary Ebbers Ackerman. She grew up in Iona and attended country school. Evelyn’s father passed away in 1930, Evelyn then helped to raise her five siblings. On November 26, 1942 she and Clarence Lucker were married at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, Minnesota. Following their marriage they lived on the Lucker family farm in Lime Lake Township where they raised their four children. Clarence passed away on January 5, 1983. Following Clarence’s death Evelyn moved to Village Apartments in Slayton. In 2007 following a fall Evelyn moved to Lindenwood Assisted Living in Slayton then in January 2017 due to failing health Evelyn moved to the Slayton Rehabilitation and Care Center in Slayton. Evelyn passed away there on December 13, 2017 at the age of 97. She was a member of St. Ann’s Church in Slayton. Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her family, attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s school activities, playing cards and dominoes, and word search puzzles. She also enjoyed crocheting and has made afghans for all of her family.
Survivors include four children and their spouses: Mary and Garry Dierks, Carol and Richard Engelkes, and Diane and James Engelkes all of Slayton, MN, and Brian and Janeen Lucker, Norwood Young America, MN; nine grandchildren: Michael and Dody Dierks, Kristen Gertsema, Lori Dierks, Debra and Jody Penoyer, Lisa and Mark Staples, Travis and Renae Engelkes, Kari and Nolan Hybbert, Eric and Katie Lucker, and Bradley Lucker; 12 great–grandchildren: Madison, Kennedy, Dawson, Payton, Jennifer, Tyler, Wyatt, Brayden, Erin, Morgan, Alex, and Leah; one brother John Ackerman and his wife Connie of Mitchell, SD; one sister Marcella Fury, Fulda, MN; one sister-in-law Marjorie Ackerman, Iona, MN and several nieces and nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Clarence; one grandson-in-law Brad Gertsema; three siblings: Joseph Ackerman, Rosella Lucker and her husband Mihlon and Agnes Bruns and her husband Jess; and one brother-in-law Philip Fury.
Funeral services were held at St. Ann’s Church in Slayton, MN on Friday, December 15, 2017 with Fr. Thien Nguyen officiating. The organist was Judy Andrews. The song leader was Sheila Crowley. The pallbearers were Steve Ackerman, Dean Ackerman, Doug Bruns, Jeff Bruns, Dan Schneider and Matt Ackerman. The honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
