According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) website, Minnesota has received an extension for REAL ID enforcement until October 10, 2018. This allows Federal agencies to continue to accept driver’s licenses and identification cards from Minnesota residents at federal facilities, nuclear power plants and boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft. After that, a different form of identification may be needed.
An Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), Enhanced Identification Card (EID) or even a passport card or book will be needed to travel by air within the United States. Passport books and cards are available at some Post Offices and county recorder’s offices. Check your local ones for further information regarding prices and availability.
Minnesotans may continue to use their current licenses as identification, since the state has been granted an extension until October of this year. Starting October 1, 2020, every traveler will need to present a REAL ID-compliant license or another acceptable form of identification for air travel within the United States.
An alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel will be required following the extension period for Minnesota (after October 10, 2018), or for other states not in REAL ID compliance. See the Transportation Security Administration website (www.tsa.gov) for a list of acceptable forms of identification. TSA does not require children under 18 to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the U.S.
