Earl Keith Halverson , the son of Earl J. and Lillian (Vick) Halverson, was born on March 16, 1933 in Fulda, MN. He grew up in a variety of small towns in SW Minnesota but eventually attended school in Slayton, graduating in 1951. Earl enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduation, where he attended Journalism School, and was honorably discharged in 1955. He then attended Mankato State University, St. Cloud State University and graduated from Arizona State in 1959. He returned to Minnesota and taught Special Education in the Richfield and Fridley School Districts before spending one year in Germany teaching in Kiaserslautern. Earl was united in marriage to Sydney “Syd” Bruflat on July 13, 1963 in Canby, MN. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2013. They lived in Crystal, MN until 1975, when they moved to Fulda, MN and he started teaching in his hometown of Slayton. He continued to teach special education until his retirement in 1995. Earl entered the Maple Lawn Nursing Home in Fulda in 2017 and in September of 2017 he moved to the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne, MN. Earl passed away on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at the Minnesota Veterans Home in Luverne at the age of 85. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Fulda, MN where he served in the choir and session for many years. Earl was also a director of Camp SOS at Lake Shetek for 13 years, was a past board member at Prairie View in Slayton and member of the Fulda VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed golfing, book collecting and reading, exercising and spending time at home. Earl will be remembered for his “Letters to the Editor”, always short and to the point.
Survivors include his wife, Syd Halverson of Fulda, MN; children, Patricia (Ric) Hollister of Blaine, MN and Doug (Jennifer) Halverson of Willmar, MN; 7 grandchildren, Adam, Alexandra, Jesica, Taylor, Jason, Abby, Morgan and Jordan; brother-in-law, Harold Morgan of Covington, VA. He is preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, Adolph Vosberg, sister, JoAnn Morgan and several aunts and uncles and other relatives in the area.
Funeral Services at the First Presbyterian Church Fulda, MN at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 with Rev. Dave Hollis officiating. The organist is Norma Meyeraan. Interment at Prairie Hill Cemetery Fulda, MN. Military honors provided by the Fulda VFW Post 9017 and American Legion Post 318
