During last Tuesday’s meeting the Murray County Commissioners gave a nod of approval to the Murray County Sheriff’s department to purchase a 2018 Chevy Silverado 2500 for $30,730.60 from Ranger Chevrolet of Hibbing, Mn. Ad additional $5,000-$10,000 will need to be added to the vehicle to get it ready for use. The department budgeted for two squads and this, according to Chris Lewis and Sheriff Telkamp, is one that needs to be replaced. The department tries to rotate their vehicles every five to six years. The request was passed on a 3-2 vote with Commissioners Magnus and Gunnink voting against.
In addition Lewis and Telkamp informed the board the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) recently held an audit of the department. Murray County IT department was deficient in a number of areas in regards to keeping criminal information separate from the rest of the county information. According to Lewis the BCA is asking to have the sheriff’s department network isolated so it’s not intertwined with the other county offices. This includes phones, data, emails – basically anything that is related to criminal justice data. Lewis explained an outside vendor will be required to complete the work. When asked what type of costs he is looking at, Lewis couldn’t pin-point the number until it’s evaluated. According to Lewis and Telkamp, this work is something that needs to begin immediately. County Attorney commented that Nobles County has a separate server for law enforcement as well as county attorney’s office. “It’s to protect the criminal justice data.”
