It was a great all-around day for the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda girls’ track and field squad at the 63rd annual running of the prestigious Sentinel Relays at Fairmont last Friday evening, May 4.
The two-class high school track and field extravaganza, held every year on the first Friday in May, was run this year under nearly ideal weather conditions and long-time event supporter Gary Hildebrandt was selected as this year’s Honorary Referee.
Hildebrandt, who is HLOF’s head girls’ coach and works with all the distance runners, has been a spectator, participant and coach at the Sentinel Relays every year since the middle 1970s. He joins Coyotes’ head boys’ coach Brad Holinka, who received the same honor at Fairmont a couple of years ago.
“I have always loved the Sentinel Relays,” declared Hildebrandt, who even delivered the Sentinel newspaper as a young boy in his hometown of Mountain Lake in the ‘70s. “It’s a great meet with exceptional competition in two classes. It’s a honor to be recognized for coming year after year to watch and encourage high school athletes as they strive to compete to the best of their ability.”
