Blasting seven hits, including a double by eighth-grade shortstop Chrissy Hermeling, Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda earned an impressive 9-3 victory over Red Rock Central / Westbrook-Walnut Grove in the second game of a high school girls’ fast-pitch softball double header at Sanborn last Thursday, May 3.
It was the second win of the season for the Coyotes, who are 2-3 overall for the young season and will travel to Mountain Lake Thursday (May 10) for a Red Rock Conference double header with the Wolverines of Mountain Lake Area / Comfrey.
At Sanborn Thursday, the Coyotes played stellar defense as 14 of the 15 Falcon outs in the second-game victory were made by fielding plays.
“Our girls played very well in the field in both games,” declared HLOF head coach Janae Kazemba. “We had just one error in the first game and none in the second. At the plate, we came through with timely hitting and we able to drive in some runs in bunches.”
After being edged by a narrow 5-4 final in the first game, the Coyotes unloaded on the Falcons in the bottom of the first inning of the second game, scoring six runs.
“That was exciting,” beamed Kazemba. “We scored six runs in the first inning, really sparking us to a nice early lead.”
