Coyote girls defeated three times in softball action last week

After winning two of its first five games to start the season, the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes were defeated three times in high school girls’ fast-pitch softball action last week.

On Monday (May 7), the Coyotes traveled to Northrop and were outscored 16-6 by the Jaguars of the combination of Martin Luther and Granada-Huntley-East Chain. On Thursday (May 10), Mountain Lake Area (Mountain Lake, Mountain Lake Christian and Comfrey) won a pair of Red Rock Conference games over HLOF, defeating the Coyotes by scores of 13-0 and 19-5 in a doubleheader at Mountain Lake.

HLOF smacked 13 hits in the game at Northrop and scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Sophomore catcher Cheyliska Schaffer enjoyed a big day at the plate for Coyotes, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs. Taylor Johanning (2-for-3) and Tessla Crowell (2-for-4) each ripped a pair of singles, while Faith Kazemba delivered a two-run double and Taylor Haberman connected on an RBI single.

Jessica VanWesten, Amber Ruthenbeck, Cassidy Hennings and Chrissy Hermeling all stroked singles for HLOF in a well-balanced hitting attack, which featured contributions from nine players.

Crowell scored two of HLOF’s six runs, while Kazemba, Hermeling, Hennings and Johanning each crossed the plate once.
